Ranking the Films of 2017: Part One

Now that the long-awaited Phantom Thread has mades its way to town and the Asheville Movie Guys have their first Monday off in a month, the time has come to reflect on 2017. In a year that had all sorts of ups and downs, endings and beginnings, it feels appropriate to eschew the usual Top 10 list and go the comprehensive route.

I've split the 208 new releases I saw over that span into five groups, sorted chronologically from worst to best, and will continue the countdown each day this week until we reach #1. If you're so moved (e.g. "The Florida Project at 176?!!?"), please comment at the end of the post and I'll be glad to discuss my rankings with you there.
